When we talk about fasting, we directly relate it to a religious or spiritual reason behind it. Fasting has its own definition & a reason in each person’s life, be it abstaining from certain kind of foods / drinks to abstaining or completely restricting oneself from eating from a few hours to a few days. The Fasting Studio (TFS) members have learnt the Art of Fasting with the able guidance of its founder Mr Ramana Krishnan, who is an expert in the science behind Fasting.
Fasting or One Meal A Day (OMAD) has always existed, beyond 5000 years, but was never studied in depth. Our ancestors had a scientific reason behind every action, which has only been diluted over the years or has completely been forgotten. Fasting being one of them. Intermittent Fasting or IF has been trending and, thanks to the technology, we have access to innumerable information on IF. But is this sustainable? Can you reap the benefits of IF by following it al your life?
This is where Mr Ramana Krishnan plays the crucial role & promises this method can be followed for life. Some of the members of TFS have been a part of this program from more than 4 years and are going strong to this day. For some of the members, weight loss is not the only reason for being a part of TFS. They may be having underlying health issues which may or may not be related to their eating habits but can be addressed with smart eating techniques. Being a part of TFS, I have realised, Fasting or OMAD is an individualistic journey and its NOT one size fits all. Each of the members fasting is based on their health concerns, lifestyle, age, weight etc. There are members who have 2 Meals A day and have lost weight or have turned over a new leaf, in terms of their healthy living.
Kavitha was a nursing mom, who kicked the age-old belief of eating for 2 while lactating her 4-month-old infant. She started her OMAD, irrespective of the condemnation from her family and is happy with her choice. Today her 2-year-old infant is healthy and super active, only making her wonder, if OMAD has her daughter so active & what would have happened if she had 3 meals while nursing. During this time, she never once felt weak or fragile, but on the contrary, she was taking care of all the household chores herself, thanks to the onset of Covid.
One other member, Rajakumar, has reversed his diabetes & blood pressure and is off both the medicines, only by following supervised OMAD & Fasting. That’s right, he has type II diabetes and has done a 10 day long modified fast & is happy about his decision. Shailesh, who has had a close call with death, cos of heart attack, has been following supervised OMAD. The Fasting Studio has members, suffering from Thyroid, kidney stones, acidity & ulcers & even those who have recuperated from cancer, who are leading a healthy life, thanks to fasting.
10 months into adapting the method of fasting, my husband Spoorthy & me have kicked out almost a 100 kgs as a team. Spoorthy was 198.8kgs and was suffering from blood pressure, a severe case of sleep-apnea, lethargy and has had a couple of close calls with the adverse effect of high blood pressure. I was 88/89 kgs, which I
put on, to look proportionate to my husband. I lost the battle, cos I was not able to keep up to his pace. But on a serious note, we were facing many health issues and was high time, we mended our ways. Thanks to fasting & OMAD, I am close to my ideal weight & my husband, who is yet to reach the double digits, is leading a healthy & energetic life. Spoorthy has done 110 days pure fast, meaning, not eating even one meal for 110 days. Is it really possible, Yes it is!
Fasting & OMAD, is a healthy lifestyle but is difficult to believe that it is humanly possible & that it is a healthy method, does not cause acidity or has any adverse effect on the body. We are brimming with energy and we do not feel tired. Most of the TFS members eat one meal, which is dinner, meaning we eat once in 23 hours. There are members from 20+ years to 70+ years, who are guided & have become smart eaters, be it eating 3 meal or one meal, in a day.
Science Behind Fasting
Fasting is the easiest and most definite way of triggering Autophagy. It is the surest way of ensuring one is in a mode of repair and rejuvenation that is missing in our lives. While going beyond 4 days may be good for stem cell generation even a simple 16 hours fast paced the way for fat metabolism and cleansing. Autophagy or self-eating cation of our cells has been the key to rejuvenation and detoxification through evolution. One only needs to trigger to feel it’s working.
